The BurtonLucifer's Bullshit Concert of the Millenium Award!
There were few contenders for this award, but the clear winners of the BurtonLucifer's Bullshit Concert of the Millenium Award are...
The Smashing Pumpkins!!! for their 1998 Adore concert. This prestigious award comes with the grand prize of giving me my money back.
How did such a band earn such an award you may ask yourself? Allow me to provide context for the criteria for this great honour.
In 1991 the band released Gish followed in 1993 by Siamese Dream. These two albums established the Smashing Pumpkins as a dominant force in the grunge movement. In the three decades since these albums have not been equalled in either quality or societal impact by the band.
By coincidence of timing these two albums also formed a large part of the soundtrack to my last years in university.
In the years following university the band released Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness which was good but not at the level as the previous two. Adore did not do well for reasons left to the reader to discern.
The concert started with the band playing their new album. Fair enough. Then they played a couple of tracks from Mellon Collie. Cool, here comes the good stuff. Then they did this wall of sound open chord thing. Ok, whatever. Then they brought audience members on stage, gave them their instruments and they played. Ok, that's cool...but it's been going on awhile now... what am I paying for?
Then they played a third song from Mellon Collie.
Then that was the end of the concert.
